Small Towns, Big Housing Needs
Rural housing development presents both opportunity and complexity. This session will explore the benefits, challenges, funding sources, and partnerships involved in creating and preserving multifamily housing in smaller Texas communities.
Participants will learn how rural housing differs from urban and suburban development, including challenges related to financing, LIHTC availability, construction costs, local subcontractors, permitting, staffing, maintenance, market demand, and tenant rental assistance. The class will also highlight key programs and partners, including TDHCA, USDA Rural Housing Service, TSAHC, Federal Home Loan Bank, local housing authorities, Councils of Governments, and community-based organizations.
Attendees will leave with a practical understanding of what it takes to move rural housing from concept to long-term sustainability.
